Semarang (September 24, 2025) — The Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Diponegoro University held an online Visiting Professor event featuring Assist. Prof. Shogo Fukushima, Ph.D. from the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, Japan.
The international event took place on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, beginning at 1:00 PM (WIB) and was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Eng. Eko Hidayanto, S.Si., M.Si., F.Med., representing the Department of Physics.
Carrying the theme “Machine Learning Potentials and its Application for Materials Science”, Assist. Prof. Fukushima explained that Machine Learning Potential (MLP) is an artificial intelligence-based computational method designed to efficiently represent atomic interactions.
This approach offers high computational speed without sacrificing accuracy, enabling faster and more precise analysis in material science research.
He presented several examples of MLP models widely adopted by material scientists. These models are developed to balance predictive accuracy and computational efficiency, significantly accelerating the exploration of novel material properties.
Applications of MLP span across various fields, including advanced material design, atomic dynamics simulations, and prediction of material behavior under extreme conditions.
Such technology facilitates faster, more cost-effective research with significant impact on innovation.
In the final part of his lecture, Prof. Fukushima highlighted recent trends in MLP development, including next-generation adaptive models capable of handling complex material systems.
The event, moderated by Mr. Dhani Nur Indra Syamputra, M.Si., saw enthusiastic participation from attendees, who actively engaged during the discussion session.
As a token of appreciation, the Department of Physics, FSM UNDIP presented a certificate of appreciation to Assist. Prof. Fukushima for his valuable contribution to the academic exchange.
