Geophysics Research Group (KBK) – Department of Physics, Universitas Diponegoro

The Geophysics Research Group at the Department of Physics, Universitas Diponegoro, is a research and education unit focused on applying physical principles to understand the structure, dynamics, and processes occurring within and on the surface of the Earth. This group integrates theoretical approaches, field measurements, and computational modeling to address various challenges in natural resource exploration, disaster mitigation, and environmental management.

The KBK Geophysics consists of five core areas of expertise:

  1. Seismology–Microtremor, which investigates seismic waves to understand subsurface structures and assess seismic vulnerability through microtremor analysis.
  2. Exploration Geophysics–Geothermal, which focuses on geophysical techniques for exploring geothermal energy resources as well as other natural resources such as minerals and hydrocarbons.
  3. Near-Surface Geoscience, which examines the shallow subsurface for purposes including geotechnical studies, archaeological geophysics, and urban/residential area management.
  4. Environmental Geophysics–Disaster Mitigation, which applies geophysical methods to monitor and mitigate natural hazards such as landslides, floods, and soil and groundwater contamination.
  5. Gravimetry–Volcanology, which utilizes gravity data and other geophysical methods to study volcanic activity and regional geological structures.

This research group is committed to producing graduates who are proficient in the application of modern geophysical technologies and adaptable to multidisciplinary challenges. Collaboration with government agencies, the energy industry, and research institutions is an integral part of strengthening the role of KBK Geophysics in supporting sustainable development and disaster management in Indonesia.

The group is based at the Geophysics Laboratory.
