From January 14th to 20th, 2024, Adam Gilbran, a student from Diponegoro University’s Physics Department, participated in a workshop program in Thailand. This program was organized and fully funded by the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT), Electric Generator Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Adam Gilbran took part in the 9th ASEAN School on Plasma and Nuclear Fusion (ASPNF) 2024 held at the Bang Pakong Training Center, Chachoengsao, Thailand.
This event provided an opportunity to learn from scientists and understand the development of tokamak nuclear fusion reactors from various countries, particularly from France, India, Russia, Japan, China, Korea, and Thailand. The experience significantly enhanced the participants’ English language skills as they had to communicate with fellow scientists in English. In addition to seminars by researchers directly involved with the fusion reactor, TINT also provided participants with the opportunity to visit the Thailand Tokamak-1 (TT-1). Participants were assigned to collect and analyze data from TT-1, which was then presented on the final day.
The ASEAN School on Plasma and Fusion Nuclear (ASPNF) is an annual event, and there is a fully-funded funding scheme provided by the organizers. This year, Adam received a travel grant of 5000 baht from the IAEA. The requirements to participate in this program are relatively straightforward as there is no need to submit an English proficiency certificate. The program only requires transcripts and a statement explaining why one wishes to participate. Adam recommends that those interested in joining the program have a passion for plasma and tokamak nuclear fusion reactors.
