To Support the World Class University Program, UNDIP Physics Lecturers Hold a Summer Course on Medical Radiation Protection

To contribute to the success of the World Class University Program, the Physics Department lecturers of Universitas Diponegoro organized a Summer Course with the topic of Medical Radiation Protection. The event featured esteemed speakers, including Zaenal Arifin, S.Si., M.Si., F.Med.; Dr. Noor Diyana Usman; Dr. Siti Fairus Abdul Sani; Prof. Dr. Heri Sutanto, F.Med.; and Zaenul Muhlisin, M.Si., F.Med. The program was held from November 11–15, 2024.

A total of 141 participants registered for the Summer Course, comprising students and researchers from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaya, Iran, Nigeria, and domestic participants, including students and researchers. Among the registrants were 31 international students, 3 international researchers, 60 domestic students, and 47 domestic practitioners/academics. The event facilitated engaging discussions and opportunities for future collaboration.

Concurrent Training on Medical Radiation Protection (PPR)

Alongside the Summer Course, the FSM UNDIP Smart Solution Unit hosted training sessions on Medical Radiation Protection (PPR):

  • Batch 7 PPR Medical 1 (Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine) with 16 participants
  • Batch 5 PPR Medical 2 (Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology) with 8 participants

Participants came from various institutions across Indonesia, ranging from Aceh to Kalimantan. The training covered essential topics such as:

  • Radiation Protection Management and Organization Systems
  • Introduction to Safety Culture
  • Fundamentals of Radiation Physics
  • Basics of Radiation Protection
  • Radiation Dosimetry
  • Radiation Measuring Instruments
  • Biological Effects of Radiation
  • Nuclear Legislation and Regulations
  • Radiation Protection Programs
  • Radiation Protection for Occupational and Medical Exposures
  • Radioactive Material Transport
  • Radioactive Waste Management
  • Emergency Handling
  • Radioactive Source Security
  • Usage of Ionizing Radiation Equipment

Practical sessions included the use of radiation measuring instruments, external and internal radiation protection applications, and handling emergencies involving sealed and unsealed sources as well as surface contamination.

BAPETEN Surveillance Activity

The training coincided with a BAPETEN (Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency) Surveillance Activity, held from November 18–20, 2024, at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, UNDIP. The BAPETEN team, consisting of Suryo Adi, Deddy R., Aji, Dyah, and Irma, conducted a comprehensive evaluation to enhance the quality of training. The team reviewed various documents, including quality manuals, modules, presentation materials, certificates, facilities, infrastructure, and trainer and management resources.

Closing Remarks

It is hoped that these activities will provide valuable benefits for all participants, particularly in advancing physics knowledge and its applications in industry and society.
