The Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Diponegoro University, will be hosting an online General Lecture on the exciting topic of future battery developments. This event will take place via Zoom on October 10, 2024, from 13:00 to 15:00 WIB (GMT+7) or 09:00 to 11:00 Bahrain time (GMT+3).
The lecture, titled “Trends in Beyond Li-ion Batteries,” will be delivered by Dr. Abbas Alshehabi, an Assistant Professor specializing in battery technology and energy materials from Bahrain Polytechnic. Prof. Eko Hidayanto from Diponegoro University will act as the moderator for the discussion.
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have long been the standard in portable energy storage technology, used in devices like mobile phones, laptops, and electric vehicles. However, with the growing demand for more eco-friendly and efficient technology, scientists are now exploring alternatives to Li-ion batteries. Some of these alternatives include sodium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries, and sulfur or magnesium-based batteries, which offer higher capacity, longer life cycles, and lower environmental impact compared to conventional Li-ion batteries.
Recent developments have shown that solid-state batteries, which use solid electrolytes instead of liquid ones, are considered safer due to a reduced risk of fire and allow for the use of pure lithium metal-based anodes. Additionally, sodium-ion batteries are gaining attention as a potential replacement for lithium-ion, mainly because of sodium’s abundance in nature, making it cheaper and more environmentally friendly.
As battery technology continues to advance, this event aims to provide new insights into future trends and challenges in the development of renewable energy and more efficient energy storage.
